Best Place For A Sports Massage In NYC
Our Approach
At Leading Edge, we understand that for athletes, having a competitive edge and minimal downtime is imperative to reaching their maximum potential. And even if you don’t consider yourself an athlete, but you enjoy regular physical activity, nobody wants to suffer from injuries and set-backs. We are committed to helping you recover faster and keeping you free of nagging pain and injuries. Our NYC sports massage therapists are adept at knowing the biomechanics of the body and recognizing what areas of your body need attention to keep you performing at your best.
Why We're Different
What sets our sports massage in NYC apart is our distinctive blend of massage and assisted stretching techniques. In one session, we not only help get you moving pain free again by reducing the swelling and improving your circulation, we also work on promoting better mobility and alignment so that your form is better. Our goal is to get you healed quickly while making you more efficient on your feet.
Integrated Techniques
Using firm deep pressure that is applied through kneading, squeezing or rolling the muscles our sports massage is able to target deeper layers of muscle tissue. This method is effective at releasing tension, improving circulation and breaking down knots or adhesions.
This massage technique is coupled with an assisted stretching technique called PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation). This involves the pairing of passive stretching and isometric contractions, creating a rhythm of contraction and relaxation that resets the neuromuscular system, enhancing movement efficiency.
The synergistic effect of combining massage and assisted stretching in an athlete’s routine addresses both physical and neurological aspects of performance. Here’s how:
Massage + Stretching:
The 1-2 Punch for Peak Performance
- Massage: Stimulates the nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing muscle tension, improving communication between nerves and muscles.
- Assisted Stretching: Uses gentle stretching and isometric contractions to deepen this relaxation response in the muscle fibers allowing for increased range of motion and flexibility.
- Massage: Increases body awareness by loading the central nervous system with sensory input creating better mind and muscle connection. This aids in better proprioception
. - Assisted Stretching: Enhances proprioception by making you more attuned to muscle and joint sensations increasing neuromuscular efficiency.
- Massage: Releases muscle tension, allowing for improved joint mobility and range of motion.
- Assisted Stretching: Actively works on expanding the range of motion by helping to increase the length of the muscles that are tight and restricted.
- Massage: Promotes blood circulation and reduces muscle tightness and soreness.
- Assisted Stretching: Further reduces muscle tightness and enhances muscle and connective tissue pliability.
- Massage: Identifies and addresses muscle imbalances, tightness, and potential injury risk factors.
- Assisted Stretching: : Further reduces the threat of injury by promoting better form, posture and alignment through increased mobility and flexibility.
- Massage: Improves muscle function, reduces recovery time and enhances body mechanics contributing to overall athletic readiness and performance.
- Assisted Stretching: Boosts performance through increased flexibility, range of motion, neuromuscular efficiency and resolved muscle imbalances.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Sports massage is not just limited to athletes. It’s designed to treat conditions and injuries linked to regular physical activity so that you can get back to moving pain and injury free and performing in tip-top shape. Below is an overview of what injuries and conditions a sports massage can best assist with.
Overuse Injuries and Conditions: Helps prevent and address overuse injuries and conditions linked to repetitive movements or activities. This doesn’t only apply to athletic activity, you can develop the same overuse injuries from a repetitive job or hobby like painting using the same arm over and over or typing at a computer for hours everyday. These include strains, sprains and tendonitis.
- Common sports-related over-use injuries and conditions: tennis elbow, golfer’s
elbow, runner’s knee, achilles tendinitis, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, ITBS(Iliotibialband syndrome), ACL tear or sprain - Common non-sports related over-use injuries and symptoms: carpel tunnel, shoulder
impingement, sciatica, spinal stenosis, herniated disc
Rehabilitation after or before surgery: Sports massage helps the body move more oxygen and nutrients to injured muscles or connective tissues of the body to accelerate the healing process. It also helps to reduce scar tissue build-up by increasing tissue elasticity and it improves lymph flow to decrease swelling, pain and soreness.
While our sports massage is administered by qualified and trained therapists who comprehend the specific needs of athletes and physically active individuals, it should not replace medical care. Individuals with specific medical concerns or injuries should consult healthcare professionals for a comprehensive assessment and appropriate treatment.
Sports massage therapy is specifically designed to elevate athletic performance, prevent and treat sports-related injuries, and expedite recovery. To achieve this, a sports massage uses deeper pressure and a more pinpointed approach to address specific pain points and muscle imbalances in the body.
On the contrary, the therapeutic nature of a regular massage is designed to be soothing, calming and stress reducing to promote an overall feeling of well-being. This involves a much lighter touch with long gentle strokes and light to moderate pressure.
Although the application is similar, a sports massage generally caters to a specified area of the body to treat an injury, muscle imbalance or pain-point to assist in recovery whereas a deep tissue massage often involves full-body.
With any type of massage you should avoid tight or restrictive clothing. You should wear comfortable clothing that is breathable such as athletic wear. This type of clothing allows easy access to the muscles that may need attention during the massage.
