Functional Strength Training: A Smarter Approach to Real-World Movement

Functional Strength Training

Do you ever feel sore or strained from basic tasks like lifting grocery bags, getting up from a chair, or carrying your suitcase?

These seemingly simple movements become more difficult with age, inactivity, or muscular imbalances.

Functional strength training addresses this problem by training your body to move better—not just look better.

This approach focuses on exercises that mimic everyday actions, build total-body strength, and improve your body’s resilience to physical stress. It combines elements of strength, stability, mobility, and coordination to help you function better in daily life.

What Is Functional Strength Training?

Man training with kettlebell

Functional strength training refers to exercises that train your muscles to work together in ways that reflect common movements: squatting, reaching, lifting, bending, and twisting. Rather than isolating individual muscles, these workouts emphasize compound movements that engage multiple joints and muscle groups simultaneously.

Unlike traditional gym routines aimed at aesthetics, functional training is performance-driven. It helps develop strength in movement patterns—enhancing how your body performs under real-world demands.

Benefits of Functional Strength Training

Functional strength training is backed by evidence and increasingly used by physical therapists and personal trainers alike. Here are the major advantages:

1. Improved Daily Functionality

By simulating real-life tasks, functional exercises increase your ability to move safely and efficiently throughout the day. Whether it’s lifting a toddler, walking up stairs, or maintaining posture during long hours at a desk, these movements translate directly to life.

We’ve seen clients gain confidence simply from being able to lift their grandkids or carry groceries without strain.

2. Injury Prevention

Many injuries occur not from intense workouts, but from improper movement patterns. Functional training addresses this by strengthening underused muscles, improving coordination, and enhancing joint stability.

This can reduce common injuries like sprains, strains, and lower back issues, and recent research backs this up—a 2025 study published in PMC found that high-load strength training significantly reduced injury rates and overall injury burden.

We often assess clients for imbalances in early sessions, and functional exercises are key to correcting these patterns before they lead to pain or injury.

3. Enhanced Balance and Coordination

Exercises that require multi-planar movement help train your nervous system to respond quickly and efficiently to changes in position or balance—crucial for aging adults or athletes alike.

4. Increased Mobility and Flexibility

Functional training involves a greater range of motion than traditional weightlifting. Movements like deep squats, rotational lunges, and kettlebell flows help maintain joint health and muscle elasticity.

5. Stronger Core Engagement

Almost every functional movement recruits the core muscles. This leads to better posture, reduced lower back pain, and stronger overall stability.

6. Support for Athletic and Occupational Performance

From athletes to healthcare workers to parents, functional strength training benefits anyone who relies on dynamic movement. It builds the type of strength that supports agility, endurance, and reaction time.

7. Aging Gracefully

Functional training can help older adults maintain independence. It strengthens muscles used in key tasks such as standing, bending, or getting up off the floor, while improving bone density and balance.

8. Mental and Emotional Well-Being

Functional training requires mental focus, coordination, and awareness. These elements stimulate cognitive function and may help reduce stress, enhance mood, and promote a stronger mind-body connection.

Functional Strength Training vs. Traditional Strength Training

While both training styles build strength, they serve different purposes. Functional strength training prepares your body for real-world movement, while traditional strength training often focuses on muscle size and isolated strength gains. Here’s how they compare across key dimensions:

Aspect Functional Strength
 Training
Traditional Strength Training
Goal Real-life performance, joint health Muscle growth, raw strength
Exercises Squats, lunges, push-pulls, deadlifts, carries Bench press, bicep curls, leg press
Movement Focus Integrated muscle chains Isolated muscles
Equipment Kettlebells, resistance bands, bodyweight Barbells, machines, dumbbells
Benefits Improved mobility, posture, coordination Increased muscle mass, power
Real-Life Application High Moderate to Low

Both approaches have value, and the best training plans often incorporate elements of each.

If your goal is to move better, prevent injury, and perform everyday tasks more efficiently, functional training should be your foundation, especially since a 2024 systematic review confirmed its superior benefits for improving strength, mobility, and independence in older adults compared to traditional training models.

For aesthetic goals or strength in specific lifts, traditional methods can complement your routine.

Core Functional Strength Exercises

To get started with functional training, focus on foundational movements that improve strength, stability, and mobility:

1. Squats

Strengthens the lower body and core. Supports movements like sitting, standing, and lifting. Improves posture and hip flexibility.

Many clients we work with begin to feel stronger and more stable in everyday tasks—like getting in and out of chairs—once squats become part of their routine.

2. Lunges (Forward, Lateral, Reverse)

Targets glutes, quads, and calves while challenging balance and coordination. Improves functional walking and climbing mechanics.

3. Deadlifts

One of the best exercises for posterior chain activation. Encourages proper lifting form, reducing strain on the lower back.

Want to ensure safe form? Explore our beginner’s guide to deadlifts.

4. Kettlebell Swings

Develops explosive hip power and full-body coordination. Boosts cardiovascular endurance while improving hip hinge mechanics.

5. Push-Pull Movements

Push-ups and rows help develop functional upper-body strength. Promotes balance across opposing muscle groups.

Curious about program structure? Compare Bro Split vs. PPL for your fitness goals.

6. Farmer’s Carries

Builds grip strength, core stability, and resilience. Helps simulate everyday carrying movements, such as lifting groceries or luggage.

We frequently recommend this movement because it mimics real-world strength demands and offers high payoff with minimal equipment.

7. Step-Ups

Emulates stair-climbing or stepping motions. Useful for building leg strength and single-leg stability.

8. Rotational Movements

Exercises like medicine ball chops or banded woodchoppers improve core rotation and dynamic spinal stability—important for athletes and functional longevity.

How to Structure a Functional Strength Workout

An effective program balances pushing, pulling, squatting, hinging, rotating, and carrying. Here’s a beginner-friendly outline you can follow to start building functional strength today:

Warm-Up:

  • Arm circles
  • Leg swings
  • Dynamic stretches

Main Workout:

  • Goblet Squats (3×10)
  • TRX Rows or Resistance Band Pulls (3×12)
  • Step-Ups (3×10 each leg)
  • Deadlifts or Hip Hinges (3×8)
  • Planks (3 x 30 seconds)
  • Farmer’s Carries (2 x 30 meters)

Cool-Down:

  • Cat-cow stretch
  • Child’s pose
  • Deep breathing

This structure ensures full-body engagement and builds functional strength progressively.

Home-Friendly Functional Training

Don’t have access to a gym? Functional training is ideal for home setups. Here are minimal-equipment exercises:

  • Resistance Band Rows for upper back
  • Chair Step-Ups for legs and stability
  • Lateral Lunges for hip mobility
  • Bodyweight Squats for total lower-body engagement
  • Single-Leg Balance Drills to improve proprioception
  • Wall Push-Ups to modify upper body movements

We regularly program these for clients training at home—they’re efficient, require minimal space, and still deliver results.

Start with low resistance and focus on form. Gradually increase intensity by adjusting reps, resistance, or movement complexity. These workouts can be scaled to all fitness levels and are especially useful for remote or at-home training.

Start Training Smarter, Not Just Harder

Functional strength training isn’t about lifting the most weight or building bulk. It’s about training your body to be strong, capable, and resilient for everyday life. Whether you’re an athlete, an active parent, or someone looking to move better and feel better, these exercises can help you reach your goals.

At Leading Edge NY, our certified trainers specialize in functional strength and movement-based training that supports your long-term wellness.

How I Reversed My Biological Age by 4 Years – and How You Can Too

Personal trainer doing strength training

I never set out with the goal of “reversing my biological age.” But over time, through consistent training, smart habits, and listening to my body, that’s exactly what happened.

Recently, I found out – through data from my Fitdays smart scale and a few key fitness benchmarks – that my biological age is 35. That’s four years younger than my actual age at the time. While there’s no single, universally accepted way to measure biological age, I’ve found it to be a powerful tool to understand how my body is aging – and where I can make improvements.

This approach has shaped not just my personal wellness, but the way we train our clients at Leading Edge. Here’s how I did it – and how you can too.

First, What Is Biological Age?

Unlike your chronological age (how many birthdays you’ve had), biological age gives insight into the condition of your body – from your muscle mass and bone density to your cardiovascular fitness and how well you move.

At Leading Edge, we combine data from smart tools and functional fitness tests to assess where our clients are starting and what areas we need to work on. We look at things like:

  • How long someone can stand on one leg
  • How deep and long they can stay in a squat
  • Grip strength and how long they can hang from a bar
  • How many push-ups they can do in a minute
  • How far they can run or walk in 12 minutes

These kinds of measures tell us a lot more than a scale ever could.

The Three Fitness Foundations We Focus On

If you’re looking to improve how your body ages – and how you feel every day – these are the areas we recommend focusing on:

1. Mobility and Movement Quality

If you sit a lot or feel stiff often, this is where we start. Our goal with every client is to help them move through everyday life with ease – getting up from a chair, reaching overhead, walking without discomfort.

We start slow and steady, especially for those who’ve been sedentary for a while. We pay close attention to movement patterns and help retrain the body to move with better form. We want your body to become so used to moving correctly, it becomes second nature.

2. Strength That Serves You

Strength training is one of the most effective ways to fight aging. And it’s not just about lifting heavy weights – it’s about functional strength.

I focus on full-body movements that mimic real life: carrying groceries, picking things up, getting off the floor. Things like farmer’s carries, pull-up bar hangs, and progressive resistance help build strength in ways that truly support longevity.

Each week, we look for progress – maybe that’s more reps, shorter rest, or heavier weight. The point is to keep moving forward.

3. Cardio, the Smart Way

You don’t have to do endless high-intensity workouts to improve your heart health. In fact, we recommend a mix of two types of cardio:

  • Zone 2 Cardio: Low-intensity activity like brisk walking that you can do while holding a conversation. We try to get 30–40 minutes of this in daily and recommend it to all our clients.
  • Interval Training: Short bursts of high-intensity movement paired with rest to improve VO2 max – a strong marker for endurance and longevity.

This combination boosts both stamina and recovery without burning you out.

Our Takeaway

Improving your biological age isn’t about shortcuts or gimmicks. It’s about consistency, awareness, and building habits that support your body for the long haul.

At Leading Edge, we use this philosophy with every client – meeting them where they are and helping them build strength, mobility, and cardiovascular health in a way that’s sustainable and personalized.

If you’re ready to take control of how your body ages, we’d love to help. Let’s connect.

Why Does Weight Loss Take So Long? Top 8 Reasons

Why Does Weight Loss Take So Long

If you’ve ever wondered, why does weight loss take so long?, you’re not alone.

Losing weight can be an incredibly frustrating process, especially when you’re putting in the effort but not seeing results as quickly as you’d hoped.

The truth is, there are several reasons why weight loss may take longer than expected. By identifying the obstacles, you can take control of your journey and make more informed choices.

Recent studies highlight the importance of understanding these challenges, as it allows you to develop strategies tailored to your unique needs. Research from leading health journals emphasizes that addressing metabolic changes and focusing on a balanced diet can significantly enhance progress. By equipping yourself with this knowledge, you can navigate your journey with greater clarity and confidence.

Weight Loss Is Not Linear

One of the biggest misconceptions about weight loss is that it’s a straightforward, linear process.

However, weight loss often involves fluctuations, and it’s normal for your weight to go up and down from day to day.

Factors like water retention, hormone levels, and even the time of day can cause your weight to vary. Research from health experts highlights that sodium intake, stress levels, and menstrual cycles also significantly affect daily weight fluctuations.

If you’re struggling to lose weight, it’s important to remember that small fluctuations are normal and don’t mean that you’re not making progress.

Your Body Adapts to Fewer Calories

Another reason losing weight is hard is because of something called metabolic adaptation.

When you cut calories, your body adapts by slowing down your metabolism to conserve energy. This is a survival mechanism designed to protect against starvation.

Studies have shown that prolonged calorie deficits can lead to reduced energy expenditure through both resting metabolic rate and daily activities.

To combat this, experts recommend incorporating regular strength training to preserve muscle mass, as muscles burn more calories even at rest. Additionally, incorporating periodic refeed days or slightly increasing your caloric intake can help mitigate the effects of metabolic slowdown, making your weight loss journey more sustainable over time.

Hormonal Changes Play a Role

Hormonal changes can also make weight loss a slow process. Hormones like cortisol (the stress hormone), insulin, ghrelin, and leptin all play a role in regulating appetite, metabolism, and fat storage:

  • Ghrelin: Known as the hunger hormone, ghrelin increases your appetite when you’re sleep-deprived or stressed. Research also shows that high ghrelin levels can lead to cravings for high-calorie foods, further complicating weight loss efforts.
  • Leptin: This hormone signals fullness to your brain. When leptin levels are low, you may not feel satisfied even after eating. Additionally, leptin resistance—common in individuals with obesity—can disrupt these signals, making portion control harder.

To manage these hormonal effects:

  • Eat protein-rich foods: Protein helps stabilize ghrelin levels and keeps you feeling full longer. Including lean meats, eggs, beans, or nuts in your meals can promote satiety.
  • Reduce sugar intake: Excess sugar can worsen insulin sensitivity, increasing fat storage and making weight loss harder. Opt for natural sweeteners or whole fruits instead of processed sugary snacks.
  • Incorporate stress management techniques: Activities like yoga, mindfulness, or regular exercise not only help reduce cortisol levels but also improve overall hormonal balance. Even short daily walks can lower stress and support hormonal health.

Stress can be a major roadblock to achieving your weight loss goals. Incorporating the right exercise routine can make a big difference. Explore how exercise reduces stress and supports hormonal balance.

You Might Be Gaining Muscle

If you’re following a weight loss exercise plan at home that includes strength training, you might be gaining muscle while losing fat.

Muscle is denser than fat, so even though you’re losing fat, the scale might not reflect this change.

Strength training improves not only body composition but also long-term metabolic health, with increased lean muscle mass contributing to enhanced calorie-burning efficiency even at rest.

At Leading Edge, we recommend focusing not just on the number on the scale, but also on other indicators like how your clothes fit, your energy levels, and overall body composition. Tracking progress through regular body measurements or using body composition scales can provide a more accurate picture of your transformation.

Not Enough Physical Activity

While diet is crucial for weight loss, physical activity also plays a significant role. If you’re not getting enough exercise, it can slow down your progress.

Incorporating effective exercises for weight loss, such as cardio (walking, running, cycling) and strength training, can help you burn more calories and build lean muscle mass, which in turn boosts your metabolism.

A study published in National Institutes of Health supports the idea that strength training, when combined with aerobic exercise, enhances fat loss while preserving muscle mass.

We strongly believe that consistency is key. Our certified fitness trainers therefore recommend finding activities you enjoy—it makes staying committed easier and more fun! Enjoying the process can increase your adherence to your fitness routine, making it a sustainable long-term habit. This approach not only supports weight loss but also contributes to improved overall health.

Underestimating Calories Consumed

Underestimating calories consumed affects weight loss

It’s easy to underestimate how many calories you’re consuming, especially when eating out or consuming snacks throughout the day. Hidden calories in sauces, dressings, beverages, and even cooking oils can add up quickly. For example:

  • Cream in coffee
  • Salad dressings
  • Flavoured yogurt
  • Butter or oil used in cooking

Tracking your food intake using a food journal or an app can help you be more mindful of what you’re eating and identify areas where you can cut back.

Lack of Sleep

Lack of sleep impact on weight loss

Lack of sleep can significantly impact your weight loss efforts. Poor sleep affects the hormones ghrelin and leptin, which regulate hunger and fullness. When you don’t get enough sleep:

  • Ghrelin levels increase, making you feel hungrier.
  • Leptin levels decrease, making it harder to feel full.

Chronic sleep deprivation can also lead to poor food choices and overeating, as the body craves more calorie-dense foods to compensate for fatigue

Tips for better sleep hygiene include:

  • Avoiding screens an hour before bed, as the blue light emitted can interfere with your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle.
  • Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule to help regulate your internal clock.
  • Creating a calming bedtime routine, such as reading or meditating, which can lower stress levels and prepare your body for rest.

Additionally, poor sleep reduces motivation for exercise and healthy eating, which further hinders weight loss progress. As many experts and trainers emphasize, quality sleep is just as important as diet and exercise for achieving weight loss goals.

Stress and Emotional Eating

Stress is another major reason why weight loss can be slow. When you’re stressed, your body releases cortisol, which can increase appetite and lead to cravings for high-calorie, comfort foods. Chronic stress can elevate cortisol levels, which not only increases hunger but also promotes fat storage. Emotional eating is also common, and many people use food as a way to cope with stress, anxiety, or boredom.

Healthy alternatives to emotional eating include:

  • Sipping herbal tea.
  • Taking a 5-minute mindfulness break.
  • Journaling to process emotions.

Incorporating stress-relieving activities like yoga, meditation, or even a walk outside can help manage stress and reduce emotional eating episodes.

Tips for Weight Loss at Home

If you’re struggling losing weight, here are some tips for weight loss at home to help you stay on track:

  1. Create a Routine: Establish a consistent daily routine that includes regular exercise, balanced meals, and enough sleep. Consistency is key to long-term success, and it helps to create a sense of structure in your day.
  2. Incorporate Exercise: Add a variety of exercises to your daily routine. Mix cardio with strength training to not only burn calories but also build lean muscle. Activities like jump rope, bodyweight exercises, and yoga are great options for home workouts.
  3. Stay Hydrated: Drinking water throughout the day helps curb hunger and supports your metabolism. Aim to drink at least 8 cups of water daily, or more depending on your activity level. Staying hydrated not only helps with weight loss but also keeps you feeling energized.
  4. Be Kind to Yourself: Weight loss is a journey, not a race. Celebrate your progress, even if it’s small. Remember, setbacks are a normal part of the process, and being kind to yourself will help you stay motivated over time.

By focusing on sustainable habits like a balanced diet, regular exercise, stress management, and quality sleep, you can achieve your weight loss goals over time. The key is persistence and consistency, not perfection.

How to Sustainably Lose Weight and Keep It Off

Sustainably Lose Weight and Keep It Off

Losing weight and maintaining it over the long term can feel like a daunting challenge, especially when faced with the temptation of quick fixes that promise rapid results but often lead to frustration and setbacks. But what if there were a way to achieve sustainable weight loss—one that lasts long after the pounds are shed? The key lies in adopting a lifestyle focused on gradual, realistic changes that support both your body and your well-being.

Instead of opting for drastic, short-lived measures, a sustainable weight loss plan is built on consistent, healthy habits that evolve over time. Our certified weight loss trainers emphasize the importance of making mindful adjustments to your diet, exercise, and overall lifestyle. These changes aren’t about short-term fixes—they’re about nurturing habits that will serve you for years to come. By focusing on small, manageable steps—like incorporating more vegetables into your meals, staying hydrated, and adding movement to your day—you set yourself up for lasting success, rather than fleeting results.

Embracing this mindset shift can help you not only lose weight but also maintain a healthy, balanced life that supports your long-term wellness goals. Sustainable weight loss isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress, consistency, and creating a relationship with food and fitness that feels both achievable and rewarding.

The Basics of Sustainable Weight Loss

sustainable weight loss diet

Achieving sustainable weight loss goes beyond short-term dieting fads and quick fixes—it’s about adopting long-lasting habits that support your health and well-being for the long haul. Here are some essential principles to guide you in your journey toward a healthy weight:

  • Embracing a Balanced Diet for Long-Term Success: Rather than following restrictive eating patterns, focus on a balanced weight loss diet that includes all food groups. A well-rounded approach should prioritize lean proteins, healthy fats, whole grains, and fiber-rich vegetables and fruits. These foods not only keep you satisfied but also nourish your body with essential nutrients. As our trainers highlight, balance is paramount. Eliminating entire food groups might promise short-term results but is unlikely to sustain long-term success and can lead to nutrient deficiencies. Embrace moderation and variety for lasting impact.
  • Portion Control for Weight Management: One of the most effective, yet often overlooked strategies for sustainable weight loss is portion control. By simply being mindful of your portion sizes, you can reduce caloric intake without feeling deprived. The key is moderation—not deprivation. Using smaller plates, measuring your food, or practicing mindful eating are all simple tools that can help you stay on track. Trainers emphasize listening to your body’s natural hunger cues and starting with smaller servings to foster a healthier relationship with food and promote sustainable habits.
  • Importance of Sleep for Weight Loss: Good sleep plays a crucial role in regulating hormones related to hunger and satiety. Poor sleep can elevate hunger hormones and reduce feelings of fullness, making it harder to stick to a healthy diet. To truly support your weight management goals, aim for 7-9 hours of restorative sleep each night. Good sleep hygiene—like establishing a regular bedtime routine and minimizing screen time before bed—is just as important as diet and exercise for sustainable weight loss.

The Importance of Understanding Your Metabolism

Before diving more into diet and exercise, understanding your metabolic type is crucial for effective and sustainable weight loss. Your metabolism dictates how your body processes food, converts it into energy, and stores it as fat- all of which significantly affect your weight management. To determine your metabolic type, observe how your body responds to different foods, your energy levels throughout the day, and how easily or quickly you gain or lose weight.

Are you someone who feels energized by carbs or do you thrive with higher protein intake? Do you notice that certain foods make you sluggish or that you need more frequent meals to feel satisfied? By identifying your metabolic type—whether fast, slow, or balanced—you can fine-tune your nutrition and exercise plans for optimal results.

Our trainers emphasize that recognizing your metabolic type is one of the first steps toward achieving a sustainable weight loss plan. It’s not just about cutting calories but understanding what fuels your body best. For a deeper dive into metabolism and how it affects your fitness journey, check out our full guide on the role of metabolism in your fitness journey.

Exercise for Long-Term Weight Management

strength training for weight loss and weight management

Physical activity is key to long-term weight management, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly can significantly improve metabolic rate and body composition, both crucial factors for sustaining weight loss. The best exercise routine is one that you enjoy and can sustain over time, whether it’s walking, swimming, or yoga. However, incorporating strength training into your regimen is especially important for long-term weight management.

Strength training helps build muscle, which not only enhances your physical performance but also significantly boosts your resting metabolic rate. More muscle means your body naturally burns more calories at rest, giving you greater dietary flexibility and helping to prevent fat gain. Cardio is also beneficial for calorie burn and heart health, but pairing it with muscle-building activities creates a balanced approach to weight management.

Finding the Best Diet for Sustainable Weight Loss

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to finding the best diet for sustainable weight loss. The best diet for sustainable weight loss is one that’s nutrient-dense and easy to maintain. Diets like the Mediterranean or DASH diets have been extensively studied for their long-term health benefits. Research published by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health shows that these diets, rich in healthy fats and fiber, improve satiety and can prevent weight gain. Avoid fad diets that eliminate engroups, and consider a consultation with a certified nutrition coach or dietitian to help you design a balanced, flexible eating plan.

The Health Benefits of Weight Loss: Unlocking a Wealth of Wellness

The health benefits of weight loss extend beyond appearance—it’s a gateway to better health and longevity. Research shows that even modest weight loss, around 5-10% of your body weight, can bring significant health improvements. According to the American Heart Association, this level of weight reduction can lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels, and even decrease the likelihood of heart disease and diabetes. Additionally, studies from National Institutes of Health reinforce that sustainable weight loss can improve sleep, boost energy levels, and contribute to better mental health. These benefits mean that the journey to achieving a healthier weight is not just about hitting a specific number on the scale—it’s about creating a foundation for lifelong wellness.

Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Weight: Going Beyond the Scale

Achieving your ideal weight is just the beginning; the real success lies in creating habits that help you keeping it off. Maintaining a healthy weight requires a blend of thoughtful approaches and a positive mindset. Here are some essential, transformative tips to keep you on the path of well-being:

  • Set Holistic Goals: Instead of focusing solely on the numbers, set goals that celebrate your energy levels, strength, and vitality. Aim to notice the difference in how you feel, move, and perform daily activities. This way, your journey isn’t just about weight but about developing a healthy lifestyle you love and can sustain.

Ready to take the first step toward a healthier you? Embrace each day as an opportunity to build this new lifestyle. Start setting goals that align with your well-being and discover what makes you feel strong and vibrant. • Track Your Journey, Not Just Your Calories: Keeping a food and exercise journal is like creating a roadmap for your progress. Use it to celebrate milestones, discover patterns, and adjust where necessary. Incorporate reflections on your mood, energy, and sleep, as these factors can be just as telling as any calorie count. Apps or a dedicated fitness diary can help keep you engaged and motivated, turning tracking into a self-care practice rather than a chore.
  • Embrace Flexibility Over Restriction: Restrictive diets can lead to feelings of deprivation, which often result in binge eating or yo-yo dieting. Instead, build a healthy, balanced approach to food. Allow for occasional indulgences that bring you joy, transforming your relationship with food into one that’s based on nourishment and enjoyment. Flexibility is key to enjoying food and maintaining long-term healthy habits.
  • Find Joy in Movement: Physical activity isn’t limited to the gym—it’s about finding what you genuinely enjoy. Whether it’s dancing, hiking, swimming, or even gardening, staying active in ways that make you happy ensures you’ll look forward to it instead of dreading it. Consistency is key, and when you love the activities, staying active becomes a natural, rewarding part of your life.
  • Practice Mindful Eating: Mindful eating transforms meals into moments of gratitude and awareness. By slowing down and focusing on each bite, you can savor flavors, recognize hunger and fullness cues, and prevent overeating. Simple habits like eating without screens or setting down your fork between bites can enhance this mindful approach, helping you tune in to your body and make more satisfying food choices.

Overcoming Challenges in Sustainable Weight Loss

The journey to sustainable weight loss can come with challenges, such as plateaus or emotional eating. It’s crucial to remember that setbacks are normal, and it’s all about how you respond to them. If you hit a plateau, our trainers suggest changing up your exercise routine or reassessing your calorie intake. For emotional eating, finding alternative coping mechanisms like journaling, meditation, or talking to a friend can help. Remember, weight loss is not always linear, and persistence is key. Recent findings by The Cleveland Clinic emphasize that managing stress through these techniques reduces reliance on food for emotional comfort.

Crafting a Sustainable Weight Loss Plan for Lifelong Wellness

To create a sustainable weight loss plan that you can sustain, start by setting realistic, measurable goals that inspire change beyond what the scale reflects. Tracking meaningful indicators like enhanced energy, restful sleep, and physical endurance provides encouragement and affirms your progress. Instead of overwhelming yourself with major changes, incorporate small, lasting habits—such as adding more vegetables to each meal, drinking a bit more water daily, or committing to a short walk. Over time, these modest adjustments build up to significant changes, transforming not only your body but also your lifestyle and mindset.

Working with an online fitness coach or nutritionist can add structure and support to your journey, tailoring your plan to fit your needs and keeping you accountable. Whether you’re creating an exercise routine, refining your diet, or focusing on overall wellness, professional guidance can make each step more manageable and rewarding. If you’re ready to get started, consider scheduling a free consultation to discuss a personalized fitness or nutrition plan. The journey to a healthier, more energized you begins with these small, achievable steps.

Conclusion

Achieving sustainable weight loss isn’t just about reaching a number on the scale—it’s about creating a lifestyle that fosters long-term health and well-being. By embracing a balanced diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and mindful eating, you set the foundation for not just weight loss, but a more vibrant and energetic life. Have you ever wondered why some people seem to effortlessly maintain their fitness while others struggle despite their best efforts?

The answer might lie in an often-overlooked aspect of health: metabolism.

In 2024, a Stanford University study (MoTrPAC) highlighted metabolism’s crucial role in fitness. Researchers found that metabolism impacts gene expression, mitochondrial function, and energy production, improving the body’s ability to manage energy efficiently, reduce inflammation, and support recovery.

At Leading Edge, our certified personal trainers have seen firsthand how understanding metabolism can lead to fitness success. In this guide, we’ll explain the complex world of metabolism and show its pivotal role in your fitness journey. From understanding your metabolic type to debunking common myths, you’ll gain actionable insights that can transform your approach to exercise, nutrition, and overall well-being.

Whether you’re looking to lose weight, build muscle, or enhance your athletic performance, understanding your metabolism is the game-changer you’ve been seeking.

Let’s explore the science, strategies, and secrets behind harnessing the power of your metabolism.

Understanding Metabolism: The Basics

Let’s start with the fundamentals. Metabolism refers to all the physical and chemical processes in your body that convert or use energy. According to MedlinePlus, these include:

  • Breathing
  • Circulating blood
  • Regulating body temperature
  • Contracting muscles
  • Digesting food and nutrients
  • Eliminating waste

Additionally, metabolism is vital for brain and nerve function. It encompasses the energy your body requires for basic functions as well as more complex activities.

At its core, metabolism converts the food you eat into energy, which fuels everything from your heartbeat to your workouts. But metabolism is more than just a single function; it’s a complex interaction of hormones and enzymes working together to manage energy balance.

Metabolic Disorders:

Metabolic disorders are conditions that affect how your body processes food and turns it into energy. These disorders can significantly impact your fitness goals and require special considerations in your exercise and nutrition plans.

Some common examples include:

  • Diabetes: A condition where the body cannot produce or effectively use insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels.
  • Thyroid disorders: These can cause an overactive or underactive thyroid gland, which can affect metabolism.
  • Cystic fibrosis: A genetic disorder that affects the lungs and other organs, leading to digestive problems and respiratory issues.
  • Phenylketonuria (PKU): A rare genetic disorder that prevents the body from breaking down phenylalanine, an amino acid found in most proteins.
Understanding these disorders helps in creating more inclusive and adaptable fitness strategies. If you suspect you have a metabolic disorder, consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new fitness regimen.

Key Components Of Metabolism

Key Components Of Metabolism

Understanding different aspects of metabolism can help you fine-tune your fitness approach. Here are the key types:

  1. Basal Metabolism: Also known as resting metabolic rate (RMR), basal metabolism is the energy your body uses for basic functions at rest. It’s the largest component of your daily energy expenditure. Factors like age, gender, muscle mass, and genetics influence basal metabolism.
  2. Thermic Effect of Food (TEF): The energy used in digesting, absorbing, and processing food. Different macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, and fats) have varying thermic effects. Protein has the highest TEF, followed by carbohydrates and then fats.
  3. Exercise Metabolism: The energy expended during physical activity, including both aerobic (cardiovascular) and anaerobic (strength training) processes. Exercise intensity and duration significantly impact exercise metabolism.
  4. Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT): The energy burned in activities other than formal exercise, such as fidgeting, walking, and standing. NEAT can contribute a significant portion of daily energy expenditure.
  5. Adaptive Thermogenesis: This is the body’s internal thermostat, which allows it to adjust its metabolic rate in response to environmental or dietary changes. It can include changes in temperature, stress, or caloric intake.

Each of these contributes to your overall energy use and can be influenced by your lifestyle choices.

What Are Metabolic Types?

Metabolic types refer to how your body processes energy and metabolizes nutrients. Understanding your metabolic type can help you tailor your fitness and nutrition strategies for optimal results.

There are generally three primary metabolic body types:

  • Endomorph

    • Physical characteristics:
    • Larger frame with naturally higher body fat percentage
    • Wider hips and shoulders

Endomorphs are efficient nutrient storage machines. Their bodies excel at storing nutrients and building muscle mass. While this makes them naturally strong, it also means they store fat more easily. Their metabolism tends to run slower than other types, which can lead to quicker energy dips throughout the day.

  • Ectomorph

    • Physical characteristics:
    • Lean, long frame with lower body fat
    • Smaller joints and bone structure
    • Similar build to marathoner

Ectomorphs have a naturally fast metabolism that burns through calories quickly. This makes staying lean easier but muscle gain more challenging. They typically can consume more calories without significant weight gain, though this tendency may shift with age.

  • Mesomorph

    • Physical characteristics:
    • Athletic, balanced build
    • Proportionate body structure
    • Similar build to gymnasts or soccer players

Mesomorphs represent a middle ground between the other two types. They build muscle relatively easily while maintaining moderate body fat levels. Their metabolism is efficient, allowing for good nutrient processing and quick response to exercise. Weight management typically requires moderate effort.

Remember: Most individuals exhibit a blend of these types, and body types can shift somewhat with age and lifestyle changes. Understanding one’s dominant type helps in working with natural tendencies rather than against them.

How Do You Find Your Metabolic Type?

To find your metabolic type, you might consider metabolic testing, questionnaires, or consulting with a nutrition specialist. These methods assess factors like your resting metabolic rate (RMR) and how your body responds to different macronutrients.

Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Consult a healthcare professional: They can evaluate your medical history and lifestyle.
  2. Consider metabolic testing: This measures your resting metabolic rate (RMR), providing insights into how efficiently your body uses energy.
  3. Keep a food diary: Track how different foods affect your energy levels, allowing for better dietary choices.
  4. Try genetic testing: This can uncover predispositions that influence how your body metabolizes nutrients.

Remember, determining your metabolic type is crucial for optimizing your health and fitness.

Metabolic Efficiency: Fueling Your Body Right

Metabolic efficiency is about training your body to use different fuel sources more effectively, particularly fats and carbohydrates. Improving your metabolic efficiency can boost your endurance, help with weight management, and enhance overall performance.

Here’s how to improve your metabolic efficiency:

  • Balanced Nutrition: Consume a balanced diet rich in whole foods to help your body access and utilize various energy sources.
  • Regular Exercise: Incorporating both aerobic and anaerobic exercises to enhance your body’s ability to switch between fuel sources efficiently.
  • Nutrient Timing: Strategically time your meals and snacks around your workouts to optimize energy availability and recovery.

The Relationship Between Metabolism and Weight

Role of Metabolism in Weight Loss

While metabolism plays a significant role in weight management, it’s important to understand that it’s just one factor among many.

Diet, physical activity, sleep, and stress levels all contribute to weight fluctuations.

A balanced approach considering all these elements is key to effective weight management.

Metabolic Age: A Key Indicator of Metabolic Health

Metabolic age compares your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) to the average BMR of people your chronological age. This concept provides valuable insights into your overall metabolic health:

  • A metabolic age lower than your chronological age suggests a more efficient metabolism.
  • A higher metabolic age may indicate that your body is burning fewer calories at rest than expected, potentially signaling the need for lifestyle adjustments.

Understanding your metabolic age can be a powerful tool in tailoring your fitness strategy:

  • It provides a baseline for measuring improvements in metabolic health.
  • It allows for more personalized nutrition and exercise plans based on your body’s unique metabolic profile.

Metabolic age testing, typically done through methods like indirect calorimetry, can offer valuable data.

However, it’s important to remember that this is just one aspect of overall health and fitness.

Always consult with a qualified fitness professional to interpret results and develop an appropriate, comprehensive fitness plan.

The Role of Genetics in Metabolism

While lifestyle factors play a significant role in metabolic rate, genetics can also influence how your body processes energy. Some people may have a naturally higher or lower metabolism due to their genetic makeup. However, even with genetic predispositions, healthy lifestyle choices can still have a positive impact on metabolic health.

By understanding these nuances of metabolism and its relationship to weight, you can develop more effective, personalized strategies for achieving your fitness goals.

Factors Affecting Metabolism

Several factors can influence your metabolic rate, some of which you can control, and others that you cannot.

What Age Does the Metabolism Start to Slow Down?

Metabolism typically slows down with age, often starting in the late 20s to early 30s. What age your metabolism slows down is influenced by factors like decreased muscle mass and hormonal changes.

However, you can take proactive steps to maintain a healthy metabolism as you age:

  • Maintaining Muscle Mass: Engage in regular strength training to help preserve muscle mass and keep your metabolism more active as you age.
  • Hormonal Balance: Monitor and manage hormonal health, as it can impact metabolic rate.

Does The Body Burn More Calories When Sick?

Yes, your body may burn slightly more calories when you’re sick due to the increased energy required to fight off infection and regulate body temperature. However, this isn’t a reliable or healthy way to lose weight. Instead of relying on illness for calorie burn, focus on sustainable strategies like balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and adequate sleep to manage your metabolism effectively.

Testing and Improving Your Metabolism

Understanding your current metabolic rate and finding ways to optimize it can significantly impact your fitness journey. Let’s explore how to test your metabolism and strategies to improve it.

How to Test Metabolism

There are several methods to test your metabolism:

  1. Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) Test: Measures how many calories your body burns at rest.
  2. Thyroid Function Tests: Since the thyroid gland regulates metabolism, testing its function can provide insights.
  3. Indirect Calorimetry: A method that measures the gases you exhale to determine metabolic rate.
  4. Body Composition Analysis: While not a direct measure of metabolism, understanding your lean body mass can help estimate your metabolic rate, as muscle tissue burns more calories than fat tissue.

Strategies to Boost Metabolism

Improving your metabolism isn’t just about quick fixes; it’s about creating sustainable lifestyle changes. Here are some evidence-based strategies to boost your metabolism:

  1. Regular Physical Activity:
    • Incorporate both cardio and strength training into your routine.
    • High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has been shown to have a particularly positive effect on metabolism.
  2. Adequate Protein Intake:
    • Protein-rich foods can boost metabolism through the thermic effect of food.
    • Aim for 0.8-1 gram of protein per pound of body weight, depending on your activity level.
  3. Increasing Calorie Consumption
    • If done correctly, your metabolism will get faster when you’re maintaining a higher protein intake along with a higher calorie intake above 1800+ calories per day. If you’re able to do this without gaining weight you’re in good shape.
  4. Stay Hydrated:
    • Water is essential for metabolic processes.
    • Some studies suggest that drinking cold water may temporarily boost metabolism.
  5. Quality Sleep:
    • Poor sleep can negatively impact metabolism and appetite-regulating hormones.
    • Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night.
  6. Manage Stress:
    • Chronic stress can lead to hormonal imbalances that affect metabolism.
    • Incorporate stress-management techniques like meditation or yoga into your routine.
  7. Eat Regularly:
    • Skipping meals can slow down your metabolism.
    • Aim for balanced meals and snacks throughout the day to keep your metabolism active.

Remember, sustainable changes are key. It’s not about drastically altering your lifestyle overnight, but rather making small, consistent improvements over time.

The Role of Metabolism in Reaching Your Fitness Goals

Whether your goal is weight loss, muscle gain, or improved athletic performance, metabolism plays a crucial role:

  • Calorie Balance: Understanding your metabolic rate helps in creating effective calorie deficits or surpluses.
  • Energy Levels: A well-functioning metabolism ensures consistent energy for workouts and daily activities.
  • Recovery: Metabolism affects how quickly your body recovers and repairs after exercise.

Why You Should Not Skip Leg Days

Why You Should Not Skip Leg Days

We’ve all heard it before: never skip leg day. But why is leg day so important?

For many gym-goers, leg workouts often fall to the bottom of the priority list. It’s tempting to focus on the more visible muscles like the arms, chest, and shoulders, especially when upper body gains seem easier to show off. However, skipping leg day can lead to serious imbalances in strength, mobility, and overall health. In this blog, we’ll dive into why leg day is essential, how it affects your body, and what happens when you skip it.

The Consequences of Skipping Leg Day

It may seem harmless to skip leg day every now and then, but consistently avoiding it can have long-term repercussions. Many people focus on building their upper bodies while neglecting their legs, leading to an unbalanced physique. This isn’t just about aesthetics – your legs are your body’s foundation. A strong lower body improves your posture, enhances your balance, and supports your overall fitness.

Let’s take a look at some of the specific problems that arise when you skip leg day:

  1. Weakened Lower Body Strength
When you regularly skip leg day, your lower body strength diminishes. Your legs are involved in nearly every movement you do, from walking to lifting heavy objects. Neglecting leg exercises means you miss out on developing important muscles like the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and calves, which are crucial for overall strength. This weakness can make everyday tasks like climbing stairs, carrying groceries, or playing with your kids more challenging and tiring.
  2. Increased Risk of Injury
Leg exercises help build stability and support for your knees, hips, and ankles. Skipping leg day can lead to muscle imbalances that strain your joints, increasing the risk of injuries such as knee pain and hamstring strain. Many athletes report aching back and knees after heavy training, and that’s often due to weak leg muscles that can’t properly support the body during high-impact movements.

Research from the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research supports the importance of balanced muscle development. When specific muscle groups, such as the legs, are neglected, it can create imbalances that lead to increased risk of injuries.
  3. Poor Athletic Performance
Whether you’re a runner, cyclist, or weightlifter, leg strength is key to success in most sports. Skipping leg day can leave you with weaker legs, resulting in slower sprint times, reduced endurance, and less power in your lifts. This decline in performance isn’t limited to obvious leg-dominant sports. Even activities like swimming, rock climbing, or tennis can suffer from weak leg muscles, as these sports rely on leg power for propulsion, stability, and explosive movements.
  4. Unbalanced Physique
You’ve likely seen the stereotypical man who skipped leg day – broad shoulders, bulging arms, but skinny, underdeveloped legs. Not only does this look unbalanced, but it also signifies a lack of overall fitness. A strong upper body should be supported by equally strong legs to maintain a well-rounded and symmetrical physique. This imbalance isn’t just an aesthetic issue – it can lead to postural problems and increase the risk of injuries due to compensatory movements.

According to Tonal’s State of Strength report, which analyzed workout data from thousands of users of their smart fitness system, men’s upper-body strength is, on average, 34% greater than their lower-body strength, largely due to neglecting leg workouts. In contrast, women tend to balance their workouts better, with only an 8% strength gap between upper and lower body

This significant gap in strength highlights how skipping leg day can lead to long-term physical imbalances, especially in men.

The Benefits of Strong Legs

Now that we’ve covered the negative impact of skipping leg day, let’s look at the benefits of regularly working out your lower body.

  1. Full-Body Strength and Power
Your legs contain some of the largest muscles in your body, including the quads, glutes, and hamstrings. When you work these muscles, you’re not just building leg strength, but also improving your core stability and upper body strength. Exercises like squats and deadlifts activate multiple muscle groups, helping you build overall power.

Read more: Functional Strength Training Exercises To Improve Your Daily Life
  2. Improved Posture and Mobility
Strong leg muscles support your back and hips, which can improve your posture and reduce the likelihood of developing chronic back pain. Many people experience knee pain and hamstring pain due to weak legs that don’t properly support their lower body during movement.

By strengthening your legs, you create a more stable foundation, leading to better posture and mobility. This improved stability can significantly enhance your quality of life, making it easier to perform daily activities and potentially reducing the risk of falls, especially as you age.
  3. Boosted Metabolism
Leg workouts are intense and often require significant energy expenditure. Because your leg muscles are large, working them can help increase your metabolic rate, even after you finish exercising. This leads to more calories burned throughout the day, making leg day a key part of any fat-loss routine.
  4. Enhanced Athletic Performance
Strong legs are essential for most athletic activities. Whether you’re sprinting, jumping, or jogging, your legs play a critical role. By consistently working out your lower body, you’ll increase your speed, agility, and endurance, all of which contribute to better athletic performance.
  5. Injury Prevention
Building strong leg muscles also helps to stabilize your joints and prevent common injuries. Weak legs can cause issues like knees hurt from standing or aching back and knees after exercising. Strengthening the muscles around your knees, hips, and ankles reduces the strain on these joints and lowers the risk of injury.

Is Leg Day Once A Week Enough?

Is Leg Day Once A Week Enough

For many gym-goers, the question isn’t whether they should have a leg day, but how often they should be doing it. So, is leg day once a week enough? The short answer is: it depends.

If you’re a beginner or someone who’s just starting out, hitting leg day once a week can be enough to build foundational strength. However, as you progress and your goals shift, you may need to increase the frequency. For advanced athletes or those looking to build serious muscle mass, two to three leg days a week might be ideal, with adequate rest days in between to allow for muscle recovery. Consulting a professional trainer is recommended when increasing leg day frequency to avoid injury and maximize results.

The key is consistency and ensuring that your leg workouts target all major muscle groups in the lower body.

What About Jogging After Leg Day?

One common question people ask is whether it’s okay to go jogging after leg day. While jogging after leg workouts can help boost recovery by increasing blood flow to sore muscles, it’s important to listen to your body. If your legs feel too sore or weak after a heavy leg day, you might want to opt for a gentler form of cardio, like walking or cycling, to avoid over-straining your muscles.

On the other hand, light jogging can also be a great way to alleviate muscle soreness and promote faster recovery, as long as you don’t push yourself too hard.

How to Create a Balanced Leg Day Routine

A solid leg day routine should incorporate exercises that target all the major muscle groups in your lower body, including the quads, hamstrings, glutes, and calves. Here’s a sample leg day workout you can try:

  • Squats (3 sets of 10-12 reps)
    Works: Quads, hamstrings, glutes, core
  • Deadlifts (3 sets of 8-10 reps)
    Works: Hamstrings, glutes, lower back
  • Lunges (3 sets of 10 reps per leg)
    Works: Quads, hamstrings, glutes, calves
  • Leg Press (3 sets of 12 reps)
    Works: Quads, hamstrings, glutes
  • Calf Raises (3 sets of 15-20 reps)
    Works: Calves

By incorporating these exercises into your routine, you’ll ensure that no muscle group is neglected, and you’ll build a stronger, more balanced lower body.

The Importance of Proper Posture in Leg Exercises

The Importance of Proper Posture in Leg Exercises

Now that we understand the importance of leg days, let’s emphasize the critical role of proper posture during leg exercises. Getting your form right is a big deal, especially for leg workouts. Why? If you don’t, you could end up with a sore back or, even worse, long-term injuries.

Think about it – we all have that friend who hurt their back while ego lifting or due to incorrect form doing squats and stopped going to the gym, right? That’s because your lower back takes a lot of strain when you’re lifting weights for leg exercises. Incorrect form can make even simple activities like walking and bending challenging and painful the next day.

To ensure safety and maximize benefits, consider working with a certified personal trainer – virtually or in-person. They can provide guidance and support, especially when managing heavier weights during leg workouts.

Conclusion

Skipping leg day is more than just a bad gym habit – it can lead to long-term imbalances, injuries, and poor athletic performance. Leg day is essential for building a strong foundation, improving your posture, and enhancing your overall fitness. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned athlete, making leg day a priority in your workout routine will benefit you in the long run.

Remember, it’s not just about doing leg exercises but doing them with proper form and posture. Correct technique is crucial for maximizing benefits and preventing injuries, especially during leg workouts.

So the next time you think about skipping leg day, remember the benefits that come from building strong legs – and the consequences of neglecting them. Your body (and your future self) will thank you!

Online fitness coaching is a way to receive personalized workout plans, nutrition advice, and support from a personal trainer through the internet. This can be done via 1-1 video calls, messaging apps, or dedicated fitness platforms. Unlike traditional in-person training, you don’t have to go to a gym or meet your trainer face-to-face. Instead, you can train at home or anywhere you have space and equipment.

Benefits of Online Fitness Coaching

There are many benefits of online fitness coaching that make it an attractive option for many people. Here are some of the key advantages:

  1. Convenience: One of the biggest benefits of online personal training is convenience. You can work out at any time that suits you, without the need to travel to a gym or schedule appointments around your trainer’s availability.
  2. Personalized Plans: Online fitness coaches provide personalized training plans tailored to your goals, fitness level, and available equipment. This ensures that you get the most effective workouts for your needs.
  3. Cost-Effective: The virtual personal trainer cost is often lower than in-person training sessions. This makes it a more affordable option for many people who want professional guidance without breaking the bank.
  4. Flexibility: With online coaching, you can adjust your workouts to fit your schedule. If you need to change your workout time or location, it’s easy to do so.
  5. Access to Expertise: Online coaching gives you access to trainers from all over the world. This means you can find a trainer who specializes in your specific fitness goals, whether that’s weight loss, muscle building, or improving athletic performance.
  6. Motivation and Accountability: Regular check-ins with your online trainer help keep you motivated and accountable. Your trainer will track your progress, provide feedback, and make adjustments to your plan as needed.
  7. Variety of Training Options: Online personal training offers a wide range of workout styles, from HIIT and strength training to yoga and Pilates. This variety keeps your workouts interesting and challenging.
  8. Community Support: Many online fitness programs include community features where you can connect with others on similar fitness journeys. This sense of community can provide additional motivation and support, making your fitness journey more enjoyable.
  9. Learning and Education: Online fitness coaching often encourages you to educate yourself about fitness through resources like videos, articles, and webinars. These resources can help you learn more about fitness, nutrition, and healthy living, empowering you to make informed decisions about your health.

Understanding how virtual personal training works can help you decide if it’s the right fit for you. Here’s a simple personal training guide to get you started:

  1. Initial Consultation: You start with an initial consultation with your online trainer. This can be done via video call or through a detailed questionnaire. You’ll discuss your fitness goals, current fitness level, any injuries or limitations, and your available equipment.
  2. Customized Plan: Based on your consultation, your trainer will create a customized workout plan. This plan will include exercises tailored to your goals and preferences, along with detailed instructions and videos demonstrating each exercise.
  3. Regular Check-Ins: Your trainer will schedule regular check-ins to track your progress and make any necessary adjustments to your plan. These check-ins can be done via video calls, phone calls, or messaging.
  4. Ongoing Support: Throughout your training, you’ll have access to ongoing support from your trainer. This can include answering questions, providing motivation, and offering tips to help you stay on track.

She decided to try online personal training and found it incredibly convenient. Another example is Mark, who wanted to improve his athletic performance. By working with an online coach who specialized in his sport, he received expert guidance that helped him reach new levels of fitness and performance.

Comparing Online and In-Person Training

When deciding between online and in-person training, it’s important to consider your personal preferences and lifestyle. Here’s a quick comparison:

  • Location: In-person training requires you to go to a gym or meet your trainer, while online training can be done anywhere.
  • Cost: Online training is generally more affordable than in-person sessions.
  • Interaction: Some people prefer the face-to-face interaction of in-person training, while others are comfortable with virtual communication.
  • Flexibility: Online training offers more flexibility in scheduling and location.

Building Your Best Body: Bro Split vs PPL Explained

Bro Split vs PPL - Explained

Ever stood in the gym wondering if you’re doing the right workout?

You’re not alone.

Lots of people get stuck trying to figure out the best way to exercise. That’s because there’s no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to fitness.

Over the years, fitness experts have come up with a variety of workout plans designed to cater to different needs and goals. This means figuring out which muscles to target on which days–a strategy known as a training split.

There’s been quite a mix of training splits introduced over time, each tailored to meet unique fitness objectives. Two, in particular, have stood out in gym discussions and online fitness forums: the traditional Bro Split and the increasingly trendy Push-Pull-Legs (PPL) routine.

Both methods promise significant results, but which one is truly the best for achieving your dream physique?

At Leading Edge, we understand how important it is to choose the ideal workout for your mind and body to attain the highest form of health. With over a decade of experience in personal training and hundreds of success stories, we’ve seen firsthand how the right training split can transform bodies and lives.

Therefore, in this blog we are doing a detailed comparison of bro split vs. PPL, highlighting the pros and cons, and helping you to decide which workout plan is the best for your body.

But we’re not just here to give you information – we’re here to guide you towards real, lasting results. By the end of this post, you’ll not only understand these popular training splits but also have a clear path forward for your fitness journey.

Let’s get started with some basics such as – what is a bro split and what is a PPL.

What is a Bro Split?

What is a Bro Split?

A bro split, or a body part split, is a workout routine that targets a single major muscle group once a week. Typically, you’ll have 4-6 training days per week, with each workout focusing on just one or two muscle groups. Because each muscle group is only worked directly once a week, these workouts involve a high volume of sets—often 10-12 sets per muscle group. In contrast, full-body workouts include about 3-4 sets per muscle group but target all major muscle groups multiple times per week, usually 2-4 times, averaging three workouts per week.

In a bro split routine, each major muscle group is trained directly only once per week. To make up for the low frequency, a higher volume is necessary.

Here is an example of a traditional bro split:

  • Monday: Chest
  • Tuesday: Back
  • Wednesday: Off
  • Thursday: Legs
  • Friday: Shoulders
  • Saturday: Arms
  • Sunday: Off

At Leading Edge, we often customize this split further based on individual goals and recovery needs. For instance, we might combine smaller muscle groups or add a second leg day for clients focusing on lower body development.

Benefits of Bro Split

Here are the key benefits of the Bro Split:

  • Enables focused training on individual muscle groups
  • Can be customized to fit specific goals and time constraints
  • Provides ample rest and recovery time between sessions targeting the same muscle groups
  • Offers variety and enjoyment by targeting different muscles in each workout
  • Allows for high training volume within a single session

Drawbacks of Bro Split

After considering the benefits, here are the drawbacks of the Bro Split:

  • Provides low training frequency since each muscle is targeted only once per week
  • May cause muscle imbalances, particularly between the legs and upper body
  • Demands more time per workout to achieve sufficient training volume in a single weekly session
  • Can result in intense delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), especially for beginners
  • Not ideal for beginners, looking for overall muscular development
  • Is primarily suited for hypertrophy and not ideal for strength training

At Leading Edge, we address these drawbacks through careful programming and personalized adjustments. For instance, we might incorporate mini-sets for lagging muscle groups on other days or use strategic deload weeks to prevent overtraining and reduce injury risk

What is a PPL Split?

What is a PPL Workout?

A PPL Split (Push, Pull, Lower body/Legs) organizes your workouts by muscle groups based on their function—either pushing or pulling. This split consists of three groups: push, pull, and legs, allowing for a six-day training regimen that targets each muscle group twice weekly.

For example, a six-day PPL split might look like this:

  • Monday: Push
  • Tuesday: Pull
  • Wednesday: Legs
  • Thursday: Rest
  • Friday: Push
  • Saturday: Pull
  • Sunday: Legs

In this setup, you train each muscle group twice a week. This allows you to either increase the total training volume compared to targeting muscles once a week or to spread the volume across two sessions for better manageability.

Training the same muscle groups twice a week doesn’t mean repeating the same workout. For instance, on the first leg day, you might do squats for the quads and hamstring curls. On the second leg day, you could focus on leg extensions for the quads and deadlifts for the glutes and hamstrings.

Our trainers at Leading Edge often use this flexibility to create varied, engaging workouts that keep clients motivated and continuously challenging their muscles in new ways.

Benefits of PPL

Here are the main push, pull, legs benefits:

  • Promotes even development of the entire body.
  • Increases time efficiency by targeting multiple muscle groups in each session
  • Enhances overall strength training by focusing on compound movements involving several muscle groups
  • Suitable for all fitness levels, including beginners
  • Offers higher training frequency, which supports muscle growth and development

Drawbacks of PPL

Here are some of the main drawbacks of PPL splits:

  • May not provide sufficient rest and recovery time between sessions targeting the same muscles
  • Might not be ideal for specific physique development goals
  • Demands a higher weekly training frequency to reach optimal training volume for each muscle group
  • Sessions tend to be more systematically fatiguing, focusing mainly on compound exercises rather than isolated movements

To mitigate these drawbacks, our trainers at Leading Edge carefully monitor clients’ recovery and adjust workout intensity as needed. We also incorporate targeted isolation exercises to ensure balanced development for those with specific aesthetic goals.

Bro Split vs. PPL

Both the Bro Split and the PPL are effective for achieving fitness results, but they have distinct differences that may make one more suitable than the other based on your specific fitness goals.

Below is a table comparing the PPL and Bro Split to help you better understand the key differences and characteristics of these training styles.

Bro Split vs PPL Workout Comparison

Choosing Between Bro Split vs PPL: What's Right for You?

Choosing Between Bro Split vs PPL

To determine which training routine suits you best, consider the following factors when comparing the Bro Split and the Push-Pull-Legs (PPL) split:

  • Fitness level
  • Time commitment
  • Individual goals

When to Choose Bro Split:

  • Ideal for bodybuilders seeking greater muscle pump and per session volume or those trying to improve specific body parts.
  • Suitable for those who can commit more time to exercise and focus on muscle-building results.

For example, if you’re looking to bring up your chest development specifically, a Bro Split allows you to dedicate an entire session to chest exercises, potentially leading to faster hypertrophy in that area.

When to Choose PPL:

  • Perfect for lifters of any experience level, including beginners, who aim to increase muscle size, strength, or both.
  • Great for individuals with limited time for gym sessions or shorter workout durations, as it allows for effective training in a shorter period.
  • Excellent for achieving higher training volumes for muscle growth due to increased weekly training frequency.

Your Route to Build Your Best Body

PPL (Push-Pull-Legs) and the Bro Split are both effective workout routines that can help you reach your fitness objectives. However, each approach has distinct features that may be more or less suitable for you depending on various factors such as your schedule, experience level, and specific fitness goals. The ideal choice between these two methods will largely depend on your individual circumstances and preferences.

Central Park running map

Why Central Park is a haven for New York runners

Central Park, situated in the heart of Manhattan, stretches 2.5 miles long and is the most frequented urban park in the nation for good reason. Its beauty and charm especially when the cherry blossoms are in bloom make it not only a scenic destination for tourists attracting 42 million visitors annually, it also has become a mecca for runners of all types. The Central Park running routes extend from Central Park South at 59th Street all the way to North 110th Street giving runners a variety of loops and trails to choose from for all difficulty levels so you never get bored! With so many routes to choose from and with the beautiful landscape of trees, flowers, grass, and historical landmarks it’s no wonder why so many runners and runner’s groups congregate here.

Central Park running map with the best running trails in Manhattan

The Central Park running map is your runners’ guide to finding the perfect running route in Manhattan for your needs. Whether you’re looking for a quick stroll, a place to run hill repeats, a rocky climb, rolling hills, or a longer scenic route there’s a little bit of everything here at Central Park. The loops range in distance from .5 miles to 6+ miles long. The full outer loop of Central Park Drive is about 6.1 miles long and is all cement ranging from flat to hilly terrain.

From there you can branch off to these popular routes:

  1. The Reservoir Path which runs 1.58 miles long and is on crushed gravel is a great option for beginners.

  2. The Bridle Path loop north of the Central Park Reservoir is 2.5 miles and is also great for all runner levels.

Other less popular routes that are just as scenic include:

  1. The Great Lawn Oval which contains a paved path that is shaped like a track and measures almost exactly one-half mile.
  2. The Ramble or the North Woods are great wooded areas to run in to make you forget that you’re even in NYC. These are also great places for bird watching!
  3. For a hilly climb try the Park’s upper loop or a jog from the Central Park Boathouse to the 79th Street Transverse Road.

Central Park is also a great place to explore and form your own running route. Just make sure you have a map with you because believe it or not it’s easy to get lost if you don’t know where you’re going!

Why strength training will help prepare you for one of Central Park's elite running clubs

While Central Park running clubs like New York Road Runners welcome runners of all levels if you’re looking to become competitive and eventually maybe even qualify for the New York Marathon you’ll need to understand how to train. Performing at your fullest potential as a runner requires more than just racking up miles. To achieve greater speed and efficiency in running, as well as to mitigate the risk of injury setbacks, integrating strength training into your training regimen is essential and we have the science to prove it. Incorporating weight training into your typical exercise routine has been demonstrated to boost both your speed and VO2 max. This is because when you resolve any muscle imbalances you present, improve your neuromuscular coordination and power output, and strengthen your bones and connective tissues your muscles don’t have to exert as much energy to run faster. Better form and technique achieved through strength and mobility training also leads to less wear and tear on your body and muscle breakdown from running. This allows you to build a higher tolerance for the beating your body takes from running on concrete and uneven terrain on NYC running paths. The Central Park running map showcases diverse terrain, ranging from dirt and gravel to rocks, concrete, and grass.

If you are unsure about how to strength train here is a strength training for runners guide to get you started! Incorporating these exercises into your training regimen at least 1-2x per week will be sufficient enough for you to see improvements in how you run within just a few months. The key is consistency and making sure you don’t overdo it. You may need to cut back on some of your running mileage to allow for sufficient recovery for your strength training workouts. Make sure to incorporate a rest and recovery day into your weekly training schedule to prevent overtraining.

We connect with NYC runners at Leading Edge on a personal level

At Leading Edge we understand why running is such an adrenaline sport. Our co-founder, Noelle, holds a deep passion for running. From her early years, she engaged in track and field and cross country throughout high school and college, even setting the collegiate record at a D1 university in the 1000 meters. Furthermore, she has prepared for and completed a half-marathon, as well as numerous 5K and 10K races. Drawing from her personal journey, she possesses firsthand insight into the significant role strength training plays in enhancing running form and pace. One of her biggest regrets in her career as a runner and athlete is not adopting a solid strength training routine sooner. With the knowledge she has now, she is confident that she could have prevented certain injury setbacks and potentially earned more medals.

This is why it’s our mission at Leading Edge to help equip NYC runners with the foundation in their training that they need to become great runners even if they’ve never ran before. We delve deeply into form and technique, evaluating your stance and movement to identify areas of your body prone to injury that require strengthening, mobility and stability enhancement, and alignment correction. Our exercise programming is tailored to address these crucial deficiencies in your form and body mechanics, aiming to transform you into a more versatile runner and provide you with a competitive advantage that you may not have experienced before.
