A Collaborative Approach to Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation for New Moms

In the wake of Mother’s Day, we are once more awed by the remarkable resilience of mothers, as we pay tribute to their transformative journey of pregnancy and childbirth. The miracle of nurturing new life brings both immense joy and physical challenges, especially when it comes to the often-overlooked pelvic floor muscles.

At Leading Edge, supporting prenatal and postpartum clients is a top priority. That’s why we’ve partnered with Stacey Futterman Tauriello, a sports medicine physical therapist with a specialty in pelvic floor health and wellness and owner of 5 Point Physical Therapy. This way we offer moms the full-spectrum care they deserve for pelvic floor rehabilitation.

Stacey’s renowned practice takes a collaborative approach, working closely with your OB/GYN and Leading Edge Personal Trainers to develop a personalized plan for your needs. With offices in both Manhattan and NJ, Stacey’s team is committed to empowering you through education and therapy for pelvic floor rehabilitation.

Symptoms related to the pelvic floor that they treat aside from pelvic pain include endometriosis, diastasis recti, genital pain, constipation, hip pain, low back pain, painful scar/adhesions, pelvic organ prolapse, and so much more! For each passing day of your motherhood, let’s celebrate every moment by equipping you with the tools to embrace your journey with strength and confidence.

Stacey's Story: Empowering Through Knowledge and Experience

Over 5 years ago this picture was taken. I was 45 years old pregnant with my first. As a practicing pelvic PT, I was terrified of delivery and what could happen. This picture was taken 1 day before delivery. On Thanksgiving Day in 2017, Lexi Paige was born with a vaginal delivery and only a small superficial tear! I was lucky to have had pelvic floor PT prior to delivery!

Now in NYC and NJ, I still hear that some physicians say they don’t “believe” in pelvic floor PT. HUH? Well at 5 Point PT, we believe in it and surround ourselves with physicians, midwives, doulas, and other wellness practitioners including personal trainers that DO… including our friends at Leading Edge Personal Trainers. We believe that knowledge is power! Being pregnant is hard. Giving birth is hard. Picking up the pieces of your body, mind, and soul after the whole ordeal is hard! You need support.

Again, knowledge is power. Urinary leakage after delivery isn’t normal. Feeling like your organs are falling out is not normal. Pain with intercourse is not normal. Having back pain, hip pain, knee pain, or other aches and pains in your body is not normal! But it happens and it’s treatable! And with the right treatment, you can get your body back to where you want it to be!

So, What Is The Pelvic Floor?

It’s your undercarriage. It supports your organs, helps close orifices, aids in sexual function, and helps unload your spine. You need it to work to function. It can be compromised depending on your delivery. And Ladies, even if you had a c-section the pelvic floor can still become imbalanced. You need a specially trained physical therapist to give you the correct diagnosis and plan to help you!

What Can You Expect On Your Visit to 5 Point PT?

We do a thorough health history of what has been going on during your pregnancy and after. We walk through goals and then move to treatment. We will work directly with your other care providers as a team approach! Your pelvic floor evaluation is through the vaginal canal. We check all aspects of how it is functioning and if there is any pain. We also look at your spine, hips, and posture and move up and down the chain if needed. Treatment shouldn’t hurt but sometimes it’s a little uncomfortable. We do not believe in no pain no gain especially post-partum. We modify treatments as needed. You should feel better after your first session. This is a journey, not a race. Everything takes time.
